    POSTA RANGERS FOOTBALL CLUB

    October 30, 2017
    0 Comment

Posta Rangers Football Club, whose slogan is “Touching Lives”, was formed during a split between the now-defunct Kenya Post and Telecommunications Corporation (KP&TC). The team branded as Posta Rangers Football Club and is duly registered with the Ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs.

The Postal Corporation of Kenya formed sporting teams specifically for the purpose of competing in the annual Kenya Communication Sporting Organization (KECOSO) Games. Due to football’s positive impact around the globe, Posta Kenya’s management embraced the team and thus incorporated it as a Corporate Social Responsibility program, as well as working with the team as a marketing and publicity ambassador for the corporation to enhance the corporate image and visibility.

Between 2006 and 2010, Posta Kenya sponsored Posta Rangers FC while it participated in the Kenya Football Federation Nationwide League. This sponsorship assisted with the development of the team in advance of their promotion to the top tier league in December 2015. Postal Corporation of Kenya was the sole sponsor of the team until Lotto Foundation joined as a co-sponsor in January 2017.

The Foundation gave a grant of Ksh 15,000,000 to supplement Postal Corporation of Kenya’s sponsorship in key areas such as match bonuses, training allowances, and per diem allowances for accommodation for away matches.

    THE WAMBIA MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

    October 30, 2017
    0 Comment

The Wambia Memorial Tournament was established in 2006 by a patron of Muhaka footclub – Mr Wambia – in response to pleas from young footballers who yearned for a more formal opportunity to display their skills and compete with other local talent.

It is now held annually and has grown over the years, attracting participants from Khwisero and Gem Constituencies. Due to its success, the organizing committee recently relocated the tournament to Lwanda Dudi Secondary School where there is a large and level playing field.

Local women now have an opportunity to sell sugarcane, groundnuts, sweets, and bananas at the events and are thus empowered economically. Socially, incidences of new HIV/Aids infections have reduced and low crime rates have been observed among the youths.

The Tournament has also created avenues for networking with like-minded personalities and institutions – most notably, the Ministry of Sports. The Foundation gave a grant of Ksh 1,500,000.

The Baringo Half Marathon is an Athletics Kenya (AK) sanctioned road race that is a key component in the Kenya National Half Marathon event schedule. Popularised and patronised by the International Olympics Committee (IOC) members and renowned local Olympic runners, the race is a popular meeting point for both established and upcoming athletes and draws its participants from far and wide, including Koibatek, Marakwet, Laikipia, Keiyo, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Nyandarua, Kisii, Machakos, Nairobi and Kajiado (Ngong) regions.

The marathon provides opportunities for discovering and developing young running talent and makes a worthy contribution to the economic and social well being of the community. Lotto Foundation gave a grant of Ksh 4 million, which went towards mobilizing athletes in the community, touring schools to identify student talent, and encouraging participation in the marathon. These local students and aspiring athletes will then be trained and mentored by professionals.

With up to 40,000 spectators participating, the Marathon is regionally recognized as a forum advocating for peace and mitigating tribalism. The event is also dedicated to creating awareness of poverty, educating and empowering youth, and reducing criminality while fostering potential athletic careers.

THE NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE OF KENYA (NOC-K)

Lotto Foundation was among the pioneers who first pledged financial support to the Kenyan Olympic Effort for Rio 2016. Our contribution supported one of the most successful teams in Kenyan sporting history. The Kenyan Rugby 7s team was amongst the first teams to feature in the newly integrated Olympic Rugby 7s competition and advanced to the final qualifying round of the Games. The Lotto Foundation also funded Road to Rio training camps at Eldoret, Nandi, and Kasarani.

While focused on these heroes of our time, the Foundation’s commitment extended to the development of future Olympic titans by supporting the Kenya Youth team in the Commonwealth Games 2015 in Samoa. Without this support, the team confirmed that they would not have been in a position to participate– as such, it was a great honor to ensure their dreams of representing their country could be realized. Lotto Foundation supported the team with a grant of Ksh 40,000,000.

    Team Kenya homecoming celebrations

Kenya performed extraordinarily at the 2016 Olympiad Rio Olympics in Brazil, such that a ceremony for Team Kenya medalists was in order to demonstrate an appreciation for their gallant efforts on behalf of our motherland. The event was held on 16th December 2016 in Nandi Bears Club, Nandi Hills, and saw medalists from the various counties – namely Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Narok, Kisii, Nakuru and Nyeri – gathered for a feast and a colorful ceremony during which tokens of appreciation were awarded.

The union of athletes from both the main Olympics and those from Paralympics created a huge sense of unity and affirmation, particularly for the athletes with disabilities. Having already substantially sponsored the preparations for Rio in association with the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK), Lotto Foundation, was honored to facilitate this celebration ceremony with a grant of Ksh 2 million.

  • ONE LAMB FOUNDATION

One Lamb seeks to provide a safe residential
facility where the victims of child sexual abuse
    can receive restorative after-care through
    counselling, affirmation, play, and security.

One Lamb works with marginalized communities in the fight against Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) by providing education programs and distributing sanitary towels to children in Nairobi. Through these programs, the partners have been able to raise awareness of children’s rights in the community, improve the level of general understanding of sexual violence, and rescue girls from sexual exploitation.

As part of the effort, the victims of sexual violence are provided with after-care services, for which there is an overwhelming need, especially those in informal settlements, where access to facilities is severely limited. Kenya has, at present, two main recovery centres where victims of child sexual abuse and exploitation can get treatment and counselling, namely the Kenyatta National Hospital and the Nairobi Women’s Hospital.

However, these centres do not have accommodation, thus the victims continue to live in the home or neighborhood where the crime against them was committed. This can result in continued abuse causing further trauma and prolonging the recovery. Education is essential in breaking the cycle of poverty – a major driving force in CSE. Unfortunately, when children experience trauma, such as sexual abuse, their ability to concentrate and learn can be greatly hindered.

Through effective counselling therapy and a sense of security, they can often overcome these challenges and reach their full potential. One Lamb seeks to provide a safe residential facility where the victims of child sexual abuse can receive restorative after-care through counselling, affirmation, play, and security. Once the children undergo the after-care program, they have an opportunity to join our scholarship program and attain a good education and skills for sustainable living.

Given the success of the initial pilot centre, One Lamb is now planning to make additional facilities available throughout the country. This One Lamb project is in partnership with the Gender Violence Recovery Centre at Nairobi Women’s Hospital and the International Justice Mission, sharing best practices and referrals for services. The Foundation gave a grant of Ksh 1,992,000.

  • THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS – ‘UNITED FROM THE TOP’

    October 30, 2017
    0 Comment

The Lotto Foundation gave funds to enable all
elders from all communities and 47 counties in
Kenya travel, meet and deliberate on major issues
    affecting the Kenyan society.

The idea of a dialogue forum amongst elders was driven by the realization that legislation and institutional reforms must engage with the customs and traditions that are recognized and practiced throughout Kenya, in order to deconstruct and re-conceptualize existing attitudes, beliefs and perceptions.

The Council of Elders responds to this realization by bringing together elders and community leaders from all 47 counties of Kenya and creates a positive dialogue amongst the different communities. Prior to colonial times, the elders in Kenya served as the primary arbiters and dispute resolution agents and provided guidance to their respective communities on the issues of the day.

Their opinions and verdicts were upheld and respected. To this day, elders command respect and authority. Article 159 of the Constitution promotes the use of traditional dispute resolution mechanisms that do not contravene the Bill of Rights and that are not inconsistent with the Constitution. The Council of Elders is among the traditional dispute resolution mechanisms that are formally recognized.

In the wake of the post-election violence in 2007-2008, the National Council of Elders was among the strongest advocates of peace. Their active dialogue forums across the country produced very favorable results. Lotto Foundation is honored to support this noble cause with a grant of Ksh 7,037,000 in keeping with its mandate for supporting communities and heritage.

    THE CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF ELDORET

In 1971, the Catholic Dioceses in Kenya createddevelopment offices with a view to motivating communities to identify their most urgent needs at the grassroots level. Recently, Lotto Foundation was in Elgeyo-Marakwet County to launch a Sustainable Livelihoods project at Kobil Primary School.

Lotto Foundation partnered with Caritas Eldoret for the Small Homes programme, which was established back in 1982 by the Diocese of Eldoret after surveys and other research were conducted by church leaders and social workers in various parishes that were eager to construct small homes to cater for the increasing number of children with disabilities.

The project currently aims to assist twelve small homes through economic empowerment and education for the disabled and disadvantaged in the society. The key beneficiaries of the Small Homes Programme are children with disabilities from disadvantaged households that cannot adequately provide for their basic needs.

The following income-generating projects were initiated by the Small Homes programme, together with Lotto Foundation:
•Tent Hiring – Tents can be hired for celebrations, which generates income in the community
•Bakery – Children are trained in baking and other food-related skills
•Agri-Business Chicken Rearing – meat and eggs generate income through sales and provide food for the homes

The project was launched by Lotto Foundation chairman Mr. Brian Waluchio and was blessed by
Bishop Cornelius K Korir. The Foundation donated Ksh 1,954,350
